Can Citations Be Exported from the Summon Service?

Exporting Search Results and Saved Citations in Summon 2.0

The Summon service supports exporting, emailing, and printing citations in the user's Saved Items folder at the top of the Summon results page. Citation management is also available through the Item Preview pane when a user previews an item in the search results set.

Export, email, and print options in the Saved Items folder:

The first drop-down menu (which defaults to As shown on search results) allows users to select from the following citation styles, which are configured on the Settings > Citation Formats page in the Summon Administration Console (see Citation Formats):

  • APA (American Psychological Association): 7th Edition

  • APA (American Psychological Association): 6th Edition

  • AMA (American Medical Association): 10th Edition

  • MLA (Modern Language Association): 7th Edition

  • Uniform (Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals)

  • Chicago 16th Edition (Notes & Bibliography)

  • Harvard: Author-Date

  • AGLC3 (Australian Guide to Legal Citation, 3rd Edition)

  • Oxford Style

  • AGPS Press - Style Manual, 6th Edition

  • SN ISO 690:2011 (Citace.com)

The Export To drop-down menu offers the export options listed in the following table. Selecting a citation management tool in the Export drop-down menu automatically triggers the export.

For Mendeley:

  • Users can export citations in Summon as they would in other online environments, but Mendeley users need to have the Mendeley Web Importer bookmark in place.

  • Users' needs can also be met by Summon's .ris and .bib export options.

For other types of exports, see the following table:

Citation Management Tool What User Experience

RefWorks

Direct export

The experience depends on which version of RefWorks is being used:

  • New and improved RefWorks:

    • A user already logged in will see their exported citations in RefWorks' Recently Added page. The Summon to RefWorks export is based on the user's browser cookie for RefWorks.

    • A user not already logged in to RefWorks will be prompted to log in.

  • Legacy RefWorks:

    • A user already logged in will see their exported citations in their Last Imported folder. The Summon to RefWorks export is based on the user's browser cookie for RefWorks.

    • A user not already logged in to RefWorks is prompted to log in.

In the Summon Administration Console, use the Settings > RefWorks page to provide a custom RefWorks Export URL if needed. The default URL is valid for most U.S. clients:

http://www.refworks.com/express/ExpressImport.asp

The following URL is valid for most Canadian clients:

http://refworks.scholarsportal.info/express/ExpressImport.asp

EasyBib

Direct export

User is taken to the Import screen in EasyBib. A user that is not already logged in to EasyBib can choose to log in, or import the citation into the temporary project space that EasyBib offers without a login.

EndNote

.ris file is sent to user's browser

If the user's browser has EndNote Web enabled, the browser will use it with the .ris file. If the browser instead is set to open .ris files with the EndNote client, the browser will launch the EndNote client.

BibTex

.bib file is sent to user's browser

If the browser has been set up to open .bib files with BibTex, then the browser will launch BibTex. Otherwise the .bib file can be saved and imported into BibTex.

Citace.com

Direct export

Users that are already logged in will see the citations in their citation lists. Otherwise, they will be prompted to log on first.

Please note that the "Enable Citace.com export option" must be turned on first. This can be found at the very bottom of the General section of the Summon Administration Console.

Citavi

.ris file is sent to user's browser

If the browser has been set up to open .ris files with Citavi, then the browser will launch Citavi. Otherwise the .ris file can be saved and imported into Citavi.

Zotero

.ris file is sent to user's browser

If the browser has been set up to open .ris files with Zotero, then the browser will launch Zotero. Otherwise the .ris file can be saved and imported into Zotero.

  • A library can disable the ProQuest RefWorks banner through the Settings page in the Summon Administration Console.

  • The Translations page in the Summon Administration Console is where you can customize labels such as EndNote and enter custom labels such as RIS (EndNote and Mendeley).
